Dual Experience (2011)

Puredata, Processing, Apple computer with built in camera, participants

“Dual Experience” uses both motion tracking and a mouse interface in order to highlight the points of contact between “the self,” defined for this piece as an agent of change originally housed within an individual’s body, and computer and the simultaneous experience of “the self” inside the origin body and “the self” extended into the computer. When the mouse is clicked a much smaller ball appears at the location of the cursor and immediately drops toward the bottom of the interface. When the ball reaches the bottom of the interface, or touches the much larger black ball, it bounces. The interface forces the user to be simultaneously aware of their control of both the mouse and of their own body by the way that these two points of contact between “the self” and the machine interact upon the screen.
